Elective Services Productivity and Workforce Development Programme

The Elective Services Productivity and Workforce Development programme, "is an exciting new programme we hope will result in significant change for the health sector," says Clare Perry, Manager of the Electives team in the National Health Board (NHB).

Working in conjunction with Health Workforce New Zealand, the programme focuses on the training and development of the health workforce to support new elective surgery theatres and continue to increase the number of elective operations provided each year.

"We are looking for proposals from District Health Boards (DHBs) to transform the way we deliver elective surgery services. The programme is to support improvements with a system-wide impact," Clare says.

The three areas the programme focuses on are:

  • improving the productivity of the current workforce
  • introducing new workforce roles over the next four years.
  • training an additional workforce to meet future needs over the longer term.

These programme areas will support the Government's goal of achieving 190,000 elective surgical discharges by 2025 - 2026 and will actually help those DHBs required to increase their delivery of elective services by more than 25 percent.

"We'll be encouraging the development of business cases to make the best use of the funds available each year," says Clare.

The programme makes up part of the Elective Services Health Target:
