Stroke software assists diagnosis

Neurologist, Dr Anna Ranta has designed an innovative software programme to help general practitioners prevent potentially fatal strokes.

Dr Anna RantaThe software helps GPs to diagnose and manage transient ischaemic attacks (TIAs) or small strokes which cause symptoms such as temporary numbness, weakness, or speech problems. These small strokes are considered a warning sign and can give doctors valuable time to intervene and prevent a full stroke.

"The software is intended to improve diagnostic accuracy, streamline referral processes, and encourage earlier treatment intervention.

"This helps to ensure that the right people are seen at the right time and in the right place," says Dr Ranta.

The tool was launched in MidCentral DHB in 2009 and Southern DHB is planning on launching it over the next few weeks.  Clinical trials to test its efficiency are ongoing in MidCentral and further trials are planned at Hawkes Bay DHB and Whanganui DHB, amongst other DHBs.

"The early results of the software have been encouraging. The referral rates to the MidCentral TIA clinic have reduced by nearly 50 percent, which has freed up appointment spaces for more urgent cases and cut down the waiting list for specialists."
